Terracon Top List

stotty has written a number of tutorials to assist both newcomers to Terragen and seasoned users alike.

NOTE: Most of the tutorials below have all been written when Terragen was at V0.8.68 and some of the screenshots may be different to your current version. You should find that the buttons will generally be the same however, even though they may be in different places. Please contact stotty if you have any questions regarding any of these tutorials.

Title - Utilising World Machine output to texture your terrains
User Level - Intermediate

DESCRIPTION - So you have your awesome terrain, you have some spectacular lighting, and you have some textures, ahh yes, those textures, bit obvious they are Terragen textures, not quite following the rules of nature huh? Well, hows about livening your scenes up a little. Have you ever wanted to create a snowscape where the snow looks like it has settled into those ridges, or how to place a lava flow down a mountainside, even simple sand in a dried out riverbed, not too tricky to do any of that if your terrain is flat, but what about positional texturing on the side of a mountain...

Here is where World Machine can help us..

Title: Get Satellite Terrain Data Into Terragen
User Level: Intermediate

FOREWORD: This one took some doing, but has been requested sooo many times - "Just how do you get your terrain like that", I apologise upfront for the size of this, it is a lengthy tutorial, but I hope worth it. I called it an intermediate tutorial, but have done it as clear and detailed as I can so anyone with basic Terragen knowledge should be able to follow it.

TUTORIAL DESCRIPTION: We all know how many times we try and do something different in Terragen - rays, new textures, new camera angles, the only thing we struggle changing is the terrain - Trying to get features using those heavy-handed terrain tools is a nightmare, the mountains always look the same. Well, now we don't have to.

Welcome to the world of satellite data. Ever wanted to do a scene based on something like Mount St. Helens, how would you generate a terrain like that in Terragen? Get yourself off to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

In this tutorial, I am going to show you two different methods of retrieving your data in the SDTS/DEM and Geo Tiff-DEM formats. The GeoTiff DEM format will require you to download a free and small program called 3DEM, I recommend you also use this program for managing your SDTS/DEM format files too, but it isn't essential. I will reveal all in this tutorial. In addition, you will also need Winzip. All links are in the Questions and Answers part of this tutorial.

stottys Sloping Beaches Tutorial

Title - Get Sloping Beaches using Internal Terrains
User Level - Basic

DESCRIPTION - The biggest problem people have is getting that gentle slope into the sea or river and usually end up with plunging rocks which are a nightmare to try and texture properly and rarely look convincing. In later tutorials, I will cover the texturing of shorelines and utilising external terrains, but for now, this tutorial is going to show you how to do this using the internal terrain generation routines without going into any texturing details.

I am assuming the following before anyone attempts to do this, you have both Terragen and the Waterworks plugin downloaded and can render an image. That is really the only requirements here. I have supplied the corresponding world file and terrain files for you to explore and analyse, you can use them as you please, but one restriction on these downloads is that you do not render the currently configured scene and call it your own work, but you may use the resources in any other way you please.
